By ATWS Staff Editor,
ATWS Dharmshala, June 2, 2026: The Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), organized a three-day workshop on SEE Learning from 30 May to 1 June 2026 at the Administrative Training and Welfare Society (ATWS), Dharamshala, for SEE Learning Facilitators of Tibetan schools.
The workshop aimed to deepen participants’ understanding of SEE Learning concepts and strengthen their capacity to effectively implement the program in their respective institutions. ATWS facilitated the event by providing the venue and related logistical support.
The inaugural session was graced by the Chief Guest, Mr. Penpa Tsering la, the re-elected Sikyong of the 17th Kashag of the Central Tibetan Administration. He was joined on the dais by Mr. Tsondue Samphel la, Senior Translator and Assistant Director of SEE Learning at the Emory–Tibet Science Initiative, and Mrs. Tenzin Pema la, Additional Secretary and Head of the Education Council Office, Department of Education.
Welcoming the participants, Mrs. Tenzin Pema la delivered the introductory remarks. She explained that the workshop primarily focused on key themes of the SEE Learning curriculum, including promotion of love and compassion, interdependence, the oneness of humanity, and single-pointed attention. She emphasized that these themes reflect the long-standing vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and are intended to benefit both Tibetan schools and the wider community.
Encouraging participants to apply the program’s teachings to students facing the greatest challenges, she urged them to document and share stories of positive transformation. She also called upon school leaders to ensure the effective implementation of SEE Learning in their institutions and stressed the importance of measuring the program’s impact following its revival under the guidance of the 16th Kashag in 2022.
Mr. Tsondue Samphel la then spoke on the profound aims and objectives of the SEE Learning program and its alignment with the vision of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. Referring to the insights of several eminent authors who advocate a paradigm shift in response to growing global challenges, particularly the rise in mental health issues, he noted that bringing about such change among older generations remains difficult. He highlighted His Holiness’s vision of fostering a sustainable and transformative solution through the integration of universal human values and Buddhist principles into school education. He encouraged participants to carry forward this responsibility with dedication and commitment.
In his keynote address, Chief Guest Sikyong Penpa Tsering la further underscored His Holiness’s lifelong commitment to promoting universal human values that are relevant to all people, regardless of their background. He stressed that cultivating these values requires a profound transformation in one’s mindset and way of thinking. He therefore urged school leaders to play an active role in the implementation of SEE Learning so as to achieve meaningful and lasting outcomes among students.
The workshop featured a series of sessions led by Dr. Lobsang Negi, Executive Director of the Centre for Contemplative Science and Compassion-Based Ethics at Emory University, and Mr. Tsondue Samphel la, Assistant Director of SEE Learning. The sessions covered a wide range of topics, including tolerance, compassion, empathy, self-compassion, resilience, interdependence, emotions and emotional timelines, systems thinking, SEE Learning implementation, pedagogy, and meditation.
A total of thirty-three SEE Learning facilitators, including school principals, headmasters, and assistant headmasters from 19 Tibetan schools across India and Nepal, participated in the workshop.
