ATWS Dharamshala, June 17, 2026: A four-day Jolly Phonics workshop for English Primary Teachers of Tibetan Schools is being held from June 16–19, 2026, at the Administrative Training and Welfare Society (ATWS), Dharamshala. The workshop is organized by the Department of Education (DoE), Central Tibetan Administration, with ATWS providing venue and service support.
The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Tsering Dhondup la, Director of the Sambhota Tibetan School Society (STSS), as Chief Guest, along with the trainer, Mrs. Tenzin Pelmo la, former English teacher, teacher trainer, and English mentor of Tibetan Children’s Village (TCV) Schools.
The inaugural session began with a welcome address by Mrs. Sonam Gangsang la of the DoE, who highlighted the workshop as a follow-up to last year’s Jolly Phonics training under the Department’s Early Grade Reading (EGR) Programme. The workshop aims to strengthen teachers’ classroom implementation of Jolly Phonics, a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and writing through phonics and letter sounds.
Twenty-eight English Primary Teachers from Sambhota Tibetan Schools across India are participating in the programme.
Mrs. Tenzin Pelmo la, who brings over 35 years of experience in education, shared insights from her recent visits to Sambhota Schools in the North-East region. She emphasized the importance of creating print-rich classroom environments, making effective use of Jolly Phonics resources, and fostering collaboration between teachers and parents. Drawing from her own professional journey, she encouraged the participants to remain committed to continuous learning and professional growth.
In his keynote address, Mr. Tsering Dhondup la highlighted the crucial role of primary teachers in shaping students’ future. He outlined STSS’s recent transition from the Sound Way approach to Jolly Phonics following extensive consultations and feedback from parents, teachers and the administration. Stressing the importance of teaching with love, compassion, and responsibility, he urged the participants to apply their learning meaningfully in the classroom for the benefit of students.
The workshop features sessions on the Jolly Phonics Programme, the Five Skills of Jolly Phonics, blending and segmenting, letter formation, tricky words, reading development, English teaching and learning strategies, read-aloud practices, storytelling, and the preparation of recycled teaching aids.
